“I was thinking about your brother Nick,” Emma began.

Emma had been doing some serious research. She was a trained reporter, after all. Initially, she had just wanted to understand the power Aunt Nana had over the family. What was it about that woman? She had such a strong pull on Greg. And on Sasha. And on Alex. So Emma did a bit of family history research—and what she found was a story about Greg’s brother Nick.

Nick had been two years older than Greg, and they were very close; but Nick died in some kind of accident a few days after his twenty-first birthday. His body was never recovered. Greg would never talk about how his brother died—he said it was a very painful memory—but Emma managed to dig up some old police reports that tied Nick’s death to Nana’s house.

Now, at Emma’s mention of Nick, Greg’s good mood was instantly gone. Dread spread into his guts, and he lost his appetite. Nick was not ever a legitimate subject of conversation. Not ever.

“Just hear me out,” Emma said. She raised her hands, pushing Greg’s anger away. She was here to protect her daughter. And she needed Greg to understand. That house was dangerous. Nana was dangerous.

Greg stood to leave, but Emma grabbed his hands and pulled him back down. People were looking at them now. They were making a scene. Greg sat back down. “Say what you need to say,” he grumbled. “But leave Nick out of it.”

“Okay. Let me talk about the house then,” Emma said. “You know I always get headaches there.”

Greg nodded. He, too, got bad headaches there on occasion. “Pollen,” he said. “Nana’s garden is always in bloom.”
